This is the first post for me, and also a tet of the WordPress plugin for Lightroom. As it is the first photography related post I thought I start with an image I use a lot for logos etc. There are two main reasons for this, the first is the image is of a grey heron (Areda Cinerea to give its latin name) and with a surname like Ahern, a heron makes a ideal choice to be a logo for John Ahern Photography. Out of the many heron photos I have this one is special as it was the first photo of mine to win a competition. While in the UK I took up photography but I was purly self taught, never joined a club or entered a competition and nature photography was the only type of photography I did. On moving back to Ireland I joined the East Cork Camera Group, ECCG (www.eastcorkcameragroup.ie). Part of the clubs activities is various competitions including landscape, portrait, sport and nature. I had entered the landscape competition but with very little success (I’ll post about that another time), so entering the nature competition was a nervous one for me.
The competition was judged by Ireland’s “numerare un” nature photographer, Mike Brown (www.mikebrownphotography). Ironically is was Mike who recommend joining the ECCG when I emailed him out of the blue asking about wildlife photography in Ireland as I was “moving home”. I did not know Mike when I emailed him, in fact the night of the competition was the first time I spoke to or met him.
As Mike went through the various entries, I sat there nervous, finally the last image came up and it was mine, and Mike’s comments, appropriate this is the last image as it is the winning one, I laid there shocked, but smiling!
The image was taken in the UK at Tichfield Haven which is between Southampton and Portsmouth. I had rented a Canon 500mm lens and this was about the second day shooting with it. The shoot is taken from a road overlooking the haven, and the heron is quite a distance away as I’m using a 500mm lens, with 1.4x converter and 1.6 focal length multiplying effect of the Canon 20D. That gives a total focal length of 1120mm!!! Exposure was 1/800s at f/7.1 at a ISO of 200. Image sharpness was achieved by using the image stabilization bit feature of the lens having the lens on a Gitzo carbon fibre tripod via a Wimberely Sidekick and Kirk BH-1 ball head.
